Buddha gave one of the reasons for the disappearance of his teaching in (Samyutta Nikaya 20.7 and Opamma Samyutta Sutta 7)
 "…………..... in the future, those Suttas uttered by the Tathagata, deep, profound in meaning, transcending the world, concerning emptiness: to these when uttered they will not listen, will not give a ready ear, will not want to understand, to recite, to master them. But those discourses made by poets, mere poetry, a conglomeration of words and phrases, alien, the utterances of disciples: to these when uttered they will listen, will give a ready ear, will want to understand, to recite, to master them. Thus it is, monks, that the Suttas uttered by the Tathagata, deep, profound in meaning, transcending the world, concerning emptiness, will disappear." Therefore, monks, train yourselves thus: to these very Suttas will we listen, give a ready ear, understand, recite and master them. "

" If you develop love truly great,
 rid of the desire to hold and possess.
 That strong, clean love untarnished by lust,
 that love which does not expect to be repayed,
 that love which is firm but not grasping,
 enduring but not tied down,
 gentle and settled,
 diamond-hard but unhurting,
 helpful but not interfering,
 cool and refreshing,
 giving more than taking,
 dignified but not proud,
 soft but not weak,
 that love which leads to Enlightenment,
 then you will be washed of all ill-will. "

"These pair of hands does the same work as mine ."
"You clear the impurities of others' households; and I
clear the impuritiees of others' hearts and minds. To me,
these two tasks are just as noble and important. Sunita-
you and I are the same ."

"From attachment comes grief; from attachment comes fear.
Whoever is free from attachment knows neither grief nor fear."

"Those who see me as form,
Those who follow me by words,
Waste their efforts
For those people do not see me.
From the good law, should the Buddhas be seen,
Reality is the guide,
The good law is not to be imagined,
For it is impossible to imagine it. "

"Stars, darkness, light,
a phantom, a dewdrop, a bubble,
A dream , a lightning flash, a cloud
This is how all things should be seen. "
- Thus spoke Buddha Sakyamuni .

"Listen to the teachings like a deer listening to music
Contemplate them like a northern nomad sheering sheep;
Meditate on them like a dumb person savoring food;
Practice them like a hungry yak eating grass;
Reach their result, like the sun coming out from behind the clouds."
Padampa Sangye

"There is no Bodhi-tree,
Nor stand of a mirror bright.
Since all is void,
Where can the dust alight."
                               -The Sixth Patriach

"Best of the paths is the eightfold,
 best of the truths the four;
 best of the virtues is freedom from attachment;
 best of the people is the one who sees.
 This is the path;
 there is no other that leads to the purifying of insight.

 Follow this path, and Mara will be confused.
 If you follow this path, you will end your suffering.
 This path was preached by me
 when I became aware of the removal of the thorns.
 You yourself must make the effort.
 The perfected ones are only preachers.
 Those who enter the path and practice meditation
 are released from the bondage of Mara."

"Awareness is the path of immortality;
 thoughtlessness is the path of death.
 Those who are aware do not die.
 The thoughtless are as if dead already.
 The wise having clearly understood this delight in awareness
 and find joy in the knowledge of the noble ones.
 These wise ones, meditative, persevering,
 always using strong effort,
 attain nirvana, the supreme peace and happiness."

 These last words of Buddha appear on the Zen Hospice web site:

 "O bhikshus! Do not grieve! Even if I were to live in the world for as
 long as a kalpa, our coming together would have to end.

 "You should know that all things in the world are impermanent; coming
 together inevitably means parting. Do not be troubled, for this is the
 nature of life. Diligently practicing right effort, you must seek
 liberation immediately. Within the light of wisdom, destroy the darkness
 of ignorance. Nothing is secure. Everything in this life is precarious.

 "Always wholeheartedly seek the way of liberation. All things in the
 world, whether moving or non-moving, are characterized by disappearance
 and instability.

 "Stop now! Do not speak! Time is passing. I am about to cross over. This
 is my final teaching"
